CAPITULO SEIS (6)

CHAPTER SIX (6)

THE WOMAN REIGNES THE KING SPORT

Author: Dr. Carlos Fernández del Ganso

In 1920 was held the first international women's football match between an English and a French team. The number of teams was growing and their players wanted to consolidate it by establishing competitions and getting partnerships but, once again, they did not let women to organize this. In this occasion is the FA (Football Association: the national organization for football in England) which do not to allow it, and they use a sadly famous statement: "There have been complaints regarding women's football, and the Council feels obligated to express with determination; that football is considered completely inappropriate for women and it should not be encouraged because of this" and they continued the report saying: "The Council invites the member clubs of the FA to reject the use of their facilities for these feminine encounters ". The mother earth where football started for the first time did not allow its daughters to play football.

Attempts to organize women around football faded, and on the eve of World War II, women's football had practically disappeared. But it had arrived in America, and several Costa Rican women's football teams were trying to participate in the Pan-American Games that were disputed in 1951 in Buenos Aires, however, doctors rejected any participation of women in these games, they were based upon the usual arguments that football was dangerous for their bodies.

The desire allowed nineteen thousand young people to play soccer in schools in the United States and the top international football organization had to intervene saying: "FIFA has never been interested in women's football. It has no competence over this and consequently does not give any kind of advice to affiliated national federations. It is a question of biology and education that should be left to the doctors and the teachers "that is how the International Federation of Football Association's communiqué ended in 1952.

However, women in Europe and America had adopted the game as their own, forming clubs and organizing sporting events. The popular chronicles say that in 1970 the First Women's World Football Championship was celebrated in Italy, where the Danish players were proclaimed champions by winning by two to zero the Italians in an extra-official tournament that does not appear even in the women's football history which are collected by official FIFA websites.(To be continued)
